\r\n^ NHL announced forfeiture of Arizona’s first-round pick in 2021 NHL Draft in sanctions announced Aug. 26, 2020. Arizona being selected in either Lottery Draw would have resulted in a re-draw.
The 2020 NHL Draft Lottery was used to determine the order of selection for the first 15 picks in the 2020 NHL Draft. As a result of a pause in the 2019-20 regular season due to the COVID-19 pandemic, the lottery was held in two phases, with Phase 2 necessary only based on Phase 1 results.
\r\n\r\nPhase 1 – There were three drawings in Phase 1: the 1st Lottery Draw determined the team selecting first overall, the 2nd Lottery Draw determined the team selecting second overall and the 3rd Lottery Draw determined the team selecting third overall. Fifteen teams were eligible: the seven teams that did not resume play in 2019-20 – ranked in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season – and eight “placeholders” that represent the to-be-determined teams that did not advance through the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers (or the teams that acquired their first-round picks). This maintained previously established odds for the Draft Lottery. Each participating club had the chance to win the first overall selection.

\r\n\r\nIn Phase 1, one of the eight placeholders – ‘Team E’ – won the 1st Lottery Draw, yielding the requirement of Phase 2. The other draws in Phase 1 were won by the Los Angeles Kings (2nd Lottery Draw) and Ottawa Senators (3rd Lottery Draw; with a position previously acquired in a trade with the San Jose Sharks), thereby locking in the order of selection for picks 2-8.
\r\n\r\nPhase 2 – There was one Lottery Draw in Phase 2, used to determine the first overall pick in the 2020 NHL Draft. Each of the eight teams eliminated from the 2020 Stanley Cup Qualifiers participated, receiving the same odds (12.5%) and represented in the lottery machine by one ball with their team logo – all eligible to claim the No. 1 pick. The seven teams not selected in Phase 2, in inverse order of their points percentages at the time of the pause in the regular season, were assigned draft positions 9 through 15.

The 2005 NHL Draft Lottery was used to determine the order of selection for all seven rounds of the 2005 NHL Draft. A weighted lottery system – explained below – was implemented, with the first drawing determining the team selecting first overall.
\r\n\r\nAll 30 NHL clubs participated. The clubs that neither qualified for the Stanley Cup Playoffs in each of the 2001-02, 2002-03 and 2003-04 seasons, nor were awarded the first overall selection in each of the 2001, 2002, 2003 and 2004 NHL Drafts, had the greatest chance of receiving the first overall selection (6.3%). These clubs were the Pittsburgh Penguins, Buffalo Sabres, Columbus Blue Jackets and New York Rangers.
\r\n\r\nTen clubs met one of the seven criteria listed above and had a 4.2% chance of winning the drawing, while the remaining 16 clubs met more than one of the criteria and had a 2.1% chance.
\r\n\r\nForty-eight balls, numbered one through 48, were placed in a lottery machine. Three ball numbers were randomly assigned to each of the Penguins, Sabres, Blue Jackets and Rangers; two ball numbers were assigned to the 10 clubs with a 4.2% chance; and one ball number was assigned to the 16 clubs with a 2.1% chance.
\r\n\r\nThe first ball expelled determined the winner of the first overall draft pick. After the first overall selection was awarded, another ball was expelled to determine which club, from among the 29 remaining, received the second overall pick. This process continued until each of the 30 first-round draft positions were assigned.
\r\n\r\nThe order of selection for the second round of the 2005 NHL Draft was the inverse of the order of selection for the first round (i.e., the club that selected 30th overall in the first round chose first in the second round). The order of selection for the third round was the same as the order of selection for the first round; it alternated each round thereafter. Each club's overall draft pick positions were announced July 29, after the awarding of compensatory draft picks.
